Today at Staincross Apiaries, we welcomed a fantastic group of visitors for a hands-on beekeeping experience in Yorkshire – and what a day it was! Under a bright sky (thankfully the rain never came!), surrounded by the gentle hum of bees, our guests suited up, stepped into the world of the honeybee, and left with unforgettable memories (and a good bit of propolis on their gloves).
🐝 What We Did Today
Our morning started with a warm welcome and a brew – Yorkshire-style – before donning suits and heading up to the hives. Nestled on our family smallholding near Barnsley, the apiary was alive with activity.
Guests learned how to:
- Gently inspect frames full of busy bees and golden honey
- Spot a queen bee and understand her vital role
- See first-hand how bees communicate through the famous waggle dance
- Understand the differences between raw honey, local honey, and supermarket blends
With lots of laughter – especially when we got onto the antics of the drones and what happens after they mate (spoiler: it’s not a happy ending for the lads!) – and a healthy dose of curiosity, everyone quickly became absorbed in the rhythms of the hive.
