We’re based on a family smallholding in Staincross, a small village on the edge of Barnsley, tucked between Darton and Mapplewell with views out towards Penistone and the Pennine hills beyond. It’s proper South Yorkshire countryside. Quiet lanes, working farmland, and hives that have been here since 2006.
You’ll find us just off the A61, about ten minutes from Barnsley town centre. Or J38 of M1.
Getting here from nearby towns
From Barnsley: around 3 miles, a ten-minute drive up the A61.
From Wakefield: roughly 10 miles, about 20 to 25 minutes by car.
From Leeds: around 20 miles, typically 35 to 40 minutes depending on traffic on the M1 or A61.
From Sheffield: about 18 miles, roughly 30 to 35 minutes.
From Huddersfield and Dewsbury: both within easy reach, generally under 40 minutes.
From Doncaster: around 18 miles, about 30 minutes.
From Rotherham: roughly 14 miles, 25 minutes or so.
From Pontefract: around 15 miles, typically 25 to 30 minutes.
From Denby Dale: a short hop, about 12 miles and 20 minutes.
From Holmfirth: around 17 miles, roughly 30 minutes across to the Pennine side.
From York: the furthest of the bunch at around 40 miles, closer to an hour’s drive, though the train from York to Barnsley cuts that down if you’d rather not deal with the M1.
If you’re coming by train, Darton station is the closest stop, on the Sheffield to Leeds line, with a short taxi or drive on from there. There’s free parking on site for anyone driving.

Nearby landmarks
The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is about 4 miles away, so a good number of visitors combine the two into a full day out. Cannon Hall and the village of Cawthorne are close by too.
Further afield, Nostell Priory and the National Coal Mining Museum are both a short drive towards Wakefield, and Pontefract Castle is easily reached if you’re heading that way. Doncaster has the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, a popular add-on for families making a full day of it, and Rotherham’s Magna Science Adventure Centre is a similar distance in the other direction. If you’re coming from the Holmfirth side, you’ll already know the Pennine scenery, and it’s an easy run over. Wherever you’re starting from, there’s usually something worth building the rest of the day around.

People come to Staincross from right across West and South Yorkshire. Families from Wakefield after something different for a birthday, couples driving over from Leeds for an anniversary gift, grandparents bringing grandchildren from Sheffield and Barnsley itself, and plenty travelling further from York, Doncaster, Rotherham and the villages around Holmfirth and Denby Dale. Wherever you’re starting from, you’re rarely more than an hour away.
